Pueblo plans a big reward for the parking shortage that visitors and businesses are enduring in the area of the Pueblo Convention Center construction.
The Pueblo Urban Renewal Authority on Tuesday approved the design plans for a four-story parking garage to be built as part of the convention center expansion and other Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo improvement projects. All of the projects are set for completion by early 2019.
The organization also released artist images of the parking garage design.
Elsewhere, Urban Renewal commissioners advanced a plan to demolish the old police annex building in the Riverwalk improvement area. The work could take place as early as February if approved by Pueblo City Council. The funding would come from the economic development loan City Council previously approved to help fund the Riverwalk projects.
The parking garage will offer more than 600 spaces. By comparison, there are 750 spaces in the Main Street parking garage.
It will be built on the former surface parking lot across the street from the convention center and adjacent to the Vectra Bank building.
To keep costs lower, commissioners on Tuesday agreed to limit the estimated $9.5 million structure's aesthetic improvements to the use of brick as the exterior facing on the lower two levels of the garage. The addition of the brick costs an estimated $292,000. Some other improvements studied would have pushed the cost up by more than $600,000.
The garage will be connected to the convention center expansion by a skybridge-style pedestrian walkway.
