A considerable transformation of Red Hook is on the horizon. Governor Andrew Cuomo signaled his support for Hudson Yards-style development of Red Hook in his State of the State address, instructing the MTA to study the construction of a new subway line that would connect downtown Manhattan with Red Hook.
The classic Brooklyn brownstone has undergone an astonishing renaissance in recent years, essentially supplanting the deluxe apartment in the sky in the popular imagination’s ideal of urban living. But Daniel Thompson isn’t some recent convert; he’s a Victorianist born and bred.
Here’s a wood-frame standalone built circa 1863 with a somewhat tangled recent past. It’s at 56 Cambridge Place, in the Clinton Hill Historic District, and offers quite a bit of potential for a buyer with vision and deep pockets. The house, once a simple wood-frame structure that was altered in the late 19th century with a new neo-Tudor, half-timbered gambrel roof and Queen Anne style angled bay, was vacant and crumbling 15 years ago.
This spacious Park Slope duplex sits a half-block from Prospect Park and has a private roof deck with skyline views — qualities which may not scream out in the midst of a “bomb cyclone,” but which will hold considerable appeal come spring. It’s at the top of a five-story brownstone at 573 5th Street — a walk-up, needless to say, and thus not for the weak of leg.
Rendering by ODA Architecture
Out-of-town visitors to the Brooklyn Museum will soon have a place to crash. ODA Architects revealed renderings for the Bedford Hotel, a five-story, 38,000-square-foot development at 1550 Bedford Avenue at the corner of Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights. The complex will replace a Gulf gas station, located less than three blocks from the storied art institution.
